(NPSL 2015 National Semi-Final) New York Cosmos B 5v2 CD Aguiluchos USA
Saturday 1st August 2015
Hofstra University, New York Attendance -
Cosmos
reached the NPSL National Final in their first season following a demolition of
Californian side CD Aguiluchos USA. The visitors had been surprise winners of
the West region having been ranked 6th place in the playoffs, but their run
ended in comprehensive fashion at the hands of the Cosmos.
The
Cosmos penned the visitors in their own half straight from kick off and almost
went ahead after 6mins when Herlein almost caught out the opposing keeper. With
Herlein on the right hand side and the keeper positioned to expect a cross, the
Cosmos player elected to go for a chipped shot and only the bar prevented the
opening goal.
Cosmos
were pressing their opponents deep in their own half, winning the ball in
dangerous areas, and it was one such turnover that led to the opening goal.
Herlein won the ball fed Chirishian whose cross was volleyed in by Brito past
Gonzalez in the opposing goal.
First
team player Guenzatti had the ball in the net for Cosmos just 3mins later after
turning in a Brito backheeled flick, but much to the dismay of many in
attendance an offside decision ruled the goal out.
But
Cosmos were not to be denied and went 2v0 up shortly after the half hour mark.
From a free kick routine Chirishian's cross found Herlein, whose drive looked
destined for the net, only to be stopped by Gonzalez. But there would be no
reprieve as the rebound fell to Brito who duly found the back of the net.
The
visitors finally managed some possession at the end of the half and registered
their first shot on goal, but it ended in a comfortable save for Zobeck.
Cosmos
continued to dominate in the second half and Chirishian again was causing the
damage as his cross was volleyed in by Herlein in the 49th minute. But the
visitors managed to strike back straight away as a ball from Rawsley split the
Cosmos defence and Adan Martinez pulled a goal back for the West coast side.
But
there would be no comeback as Cosmos regained control and the visitors were
reduced to 10 men when Dereck Dodrill was sent off after picking up a 2nd
yellow card following a reckless challenge on Neeskens.
MOTM
Chirishian got the goal his performance deserved as he made it 4v1 after an
assist from Herlein.
Herlein
made it 5v1shortly after as his free kick was deflected past Gonzalez.
The
visitors would score the last goal however as Devin Collins followed up after
his initial effort was saved to convert the rebound. CD could have reduced the
arrears further, but Ramos hit the post in the 89th minute of a one sided
encounter.
