(NPSL 2015) New York Cosmos B 2v1 Greater Lowell United

Sunday 12th July 2015
Mitchel Field, New York   Attendance -

Cosmos B finished the regular season unbeaten after an underwhelming 2v1 victory over Greater Lowell United. The narrow 2v1 victory was a surprise against a side who have only managed one point all season, but it was a Cosmos side missing several regulars, who took part in the game v Phantoms the day before.

Neither side created any chances of note in the opening exchanges, but Cosmos B took the lead shortly before the half hour mark through Brito, who took the ball round the keeper before slotting in.
Shortly after and the United keeper was tested by Diaby who took down a cross from Andersson before shooting.
After a quiet start to the game suddenly there was a flurry of chances as the Cosmos finally clicked into gear. A clever ball from Costa put Stahler in and he coolly slotted the ball in to double the lead. Cosmos continued to apply pressure and Andersson had an effort on goal, but his header went off target from a right wing cross.
Diaby should have made it 3v0 as the ball fell invitingly into his path on goal, but United keeper Manning did well to keep the effort out.
The second half saw Cosmos continue their dominance. But despite the game being played almost exclusively in the United half, the United defence stood firm and denied Cosmos a clear cut opportunity to put further distance between the 2 sides.
After the hour mark sloppy play in the Cosmos defence gave United a rare glimpse of goal, but a long range effort went narrowly wide.  Cosmos did eventually manage to find a way past the United defence, but the United keeper did well to fling himself to his right and tip the ball wide.
Pittman came even closer 5mins later as his well struck curling effort came off the United bar.
But from the resulting place kick, United almost pulled a goal back as Gauntlett got on the end of a flick on and outpaced the Cosmos defence, only for Cosmos keeper Keasel Broome to come to his sides rescue with a save.
But from the resulting corner, United did pull a goal back.
The corner struck a Cosmos players hand in the box and the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty. Doug Searl stepped up to tuck the penalty away, to make the last 12mins of the game more interesting.
Cosmos should have regained their 2 goal lead shortly after, but after being set up by Pittman, Herlein squandered the chance. Cosmos missed another golden opportunity in the dying moments of normal time, but still the 3rd goal proved elusive.
Cosmos failed to add to the score, ensuring that the scoreline was flattering to the visitors, but the victory means Cosmos end the regular season unbeaten.
