LIU Brooklyn, New York   Attendance -

The Cosmos exited the US Open cup at the first hurdle for the 2nd successive season after a 3v2 loss to the Brooklyn Italians. The loss is all the more galling as the Cosmos had to appeal to the USSF to gain entry to the competition following the collapse of the NASL.
Cosmos started the stronger side and saw plenty of the ball with Brooklyn having to work hard to defend for long periods. Rafa Garcia had a sight of goal in the 20th minute but his shot from the edge of the area went narrowly wide.
The Italians had hardly threatened a goal but against the run of play just after the half hour mark when Guiseppe Barone got on the end of a through pass and flicked the ball over the onrushing Cosmos keeper Macklin Robinson to put the home side ahead.
Cosmos responded almost immediately in similar circumstances, this time it was Bardic who got on the end of a long ball from Chris Wingert and he Bardic poked the ball past Brookly keeper Bernardi to make it 1v1.
Bardic had a half chance to put his side ahead soon after as he was found at the far post from a cross from the left, but he miscued his volley badly. Brooklyn were still threatening despite not seeing much of the ball as they burst through on goal but a heavy tough allowed Robinson to collect the ball.
Cosmos came out strongly in the 2nd half and created some opportunities on the Brooklyn goal, but the home side continued to frustrate the Cosmos attack. Cosmos continued on the front foot and went close on a couple of occasions. A Cosmos goal looked inevitable, but once again Brooklyn struck against the run of play. A Herbert ball was played in behind the flat footed Cosmos defence and Rasmus Hansen slotted the ball past Robinson to make it 2v1.
Brooklyn had barely stopped celebrating when Cosmos leveled it again after good work from Espinal led to a low cross which Wojcik converted from close range. Cosmos probed away at the Brooklyn defence and came close to taking the lead on 75mins but Sanchez's shot hit the post and the rebound was scrambled away. Ast he game entered the final 10mins Bardic had a goalbound effort blocked as Cosmos looked for a late winner.
But once again it was Brooklyn who struck and this time there would be no Cosmos comeback. An unmarked Hansen was found by another long ball and the Brooklyn man cut inside and smashed the ball into the Cosmos net with just 5mins remaining.
