(Friendly) New York Cosmos B 2v1 St Pauli
Thursday 23rd May 2019
Rocco B Commisso Stadium, New York, Attendance -
New York Cosmos hosted an international frinedly for the first time in the reboot era as a late Al Hassan goal saw off German second division side St Pauli.
Cosmos caught their German visitors cold with a goal after just 6 minutes, but the home side could have scored even earlier. A well worked move led to Bardic having a clear sight of goal but the Cosmos man fired straight at the legs of Himmelmann in the St Pauli goal. But from the resulting corner Cosmos took the lead as an unmarked Matt Lewis headed the ball across goal for Sembroni to slide the ball in from close range.
St Pauli showed their class and almost equalised straight from the restart when a beautiful ball with the outside of the foot curled beyond the Cosmos defence but the resulting shot went narrowly wide of the Cosmos goal.
It didn't take long for St Pauli to level matters, but the goal had an element of fortune to it after a penalty was controversially awarded to the visitors. St Pauli's Kevin Lankford drove into the Cosmos penalty area but was stopped by a well timed tackle from Sembroni, only for the ref to award a penalty for a handball during the incident. St Pauli captain Sami Allagui smashed the penalty past Castano to make it 1v1.
The visitors should have taken the lead shortly after when Allagui was sent clean through on the Cosmos goal. The St Pauli man opted for an extravagant chip which Castano managed to turn wide for a corner to let the Cosmos off the hook.
But Cosmos enjoyed a good spell as the half wore on and Bocanegra let fly with a long range effort that had Himmelmann scrambling to tip it wide. Kevin Venegas was proving a threat down the right wing and sent in 2 dangerous low crosses for Ledula and Diosa, but both men squandered good chances to score as the half ended level at 1v1.
After a slow start to the 2nd half there were chances at either end within the space of 60 seconds. Firstly Aaron Dennis exchanged passes before firing off target and Blanchett had to be quick off his line to stop a dangerous attack at the other end.
Dennis continued to be a threat and skipped past a St Pauli player after 65mins but his well hit shot was straight at the keeper.
As the game wore on it was Cosmos who were looking for the winner and with 15mins remaining Ledula almost took advantage of a defensive mistake, but his shot went wide. Aaron Dennis should have scored the winner as he was presented with an unmarked header right in front of goal from a Al Hassan cross, but he directed his header wide. But with only a couple of minutes remaining Cosmos would get the winner to cap off a memorable day for the club as Aaron Dennis slipped the ball to Al Hassan who slid ball in for the winner.
