Johnston High School, Rhode Island Attendance -
New York Cosmos clinched a place in the playoffs with 4 games to spare after a routine win on the road against Rhode Island Reds. Cosmos were always in control and after leading 2v0 in the first half went into cruise control to ease to victory.
Cosmos made a bright start to the game and rewarded with an early goal thanks to a great curling effort by Bardic. Cosmos were having joy in an open start to the game and had some threatening attacks on the home sides defence.
New York were enjoying plenty of possession and doubled the lead from a corner kick. The Reds keeper did not deal with the set piece and Lewis bundled the ball over the line. There was little coming the other way from an outclassed opposition although Blanchett had to be quickly off his line to snuff out a ball played to Gill after the Reds won the ball in the Cosmos half.
The second half saw the home side raise their game slightly although Blanchett was still rarely called into action. Cosmos made a slow start to the half, but as the half wore on created a series of chances and were twice denied by the woodwork. Ledula somehow struck the bar from close range after good work by Venegas and shortly after Venegas rattled the woodwork after some more great play. Ledula and Bardic also had shots off target as Cosmos went in search of a 3rd goal to settle the match.
Cosmos were creating chances with increasing regularity but a 3rd goal remained elusive as Bardic failed to convert from close range after a Ledula cross and Ledula headed narrowly over from the resulting corner.
Espinal came on as sub and was denied by the Rhode Island keeper as he made a stop with his feet as Cosmos continued to dominate.
