(NPSL Members Cup 2019) Chattanooga FC 0v1 New York Cosmos B
Saturday 10th August 2019
Finlay Stadium, Chattanooga Attendance - 3,500
A trademark Junior Burgos free-kick was enough to edge Chattanooga in the opening fixture of the NPSL Member Cup. The competition had undergone some turmoil with some teams pulling out of the competition, but New York were glad to get back in action following defeat in the NPSL Final only a week prior.
Cosmos lined up with much of the side that played in the final, less Bocanegra who had left the side to join Charlotte Independence. The home side settled the best, but after 10mins New York should have taken the lead. The Chattanooga keeper made a good save as a well worked move cut the home sides defence open, but Cosmos looked set to conver the rebound, but unbelievably Al Hassan managed to miss the target despite the unguarded goal gaping in front of him, albeit Hassan had to stretch to get to the ball.
Chattanooga went close themselves from a well taken free-kick from Sanchez which struck the Cosmos bar.
A Chattanooga effort stung the hands of Blanchette as Chattanooga continued to probe but the action dried up as the half wore on and it was scoreless at the interval.
Cosmos had been largely lifeless in the first half but came out looking energised and wasted a good chance early in the second half when after creating a good shooting position the ball was screwed horribly wide.
Just before the hour mark Cosmos threatened again as Espinal had a sight at goal, but at a tight angle his shot was struck into the side netting, again failing to test the Chattanooga keeper.
With neither side looking like making the breakthrough it was left to the lethal free-kick ability of Burgos to win the game. He struck an effort over the wall and into the home sides net to earn Cosmos the spoils.
