(NPSL Members Cup 2019) Milwaukee Torrent 1v2 New York Cosmos B
Saturday 5th October 2019
Hart Park, Milwaukee Attendance -
Following Detroit's win in Chattanooga, Cosmos were left needing a win in Milwaukee to realistically keep their Members Cup hopes alive. But after falling behind early on, Cosmos scored wither side of half time to take the 3 points.
Cosmos were on the front foot from the start but against the run of play Torrent took the lead. The home side won a free-kick close to the touchline. The ball was whipped in but Castano in the Cosmos goal could not hold the ball fired at him and Milwaukee defender Capozucchi was on hand to capitalise on the fumble.
Cosmos continued to pressure the Torrent and former Cosmos keeper Tenjo pushed an Espinal effort wide as Cosmos went in search of an equaliser. Soon after Torrent survived a major scare as Espinal sent in a free-kick which Tenjo misjudged, but the ball somehow stayed out of the net as a scrambled effort flew fractionally over.
Milwaukee picked up 3 first half yellow cards as they resorted to foul means to stop the Cosmos attacks, but New York finally got the goal they deserved just before half time. Agolli sent over a cross to John-Brown and the striker expertly guided a headed into the top corner out of reach of the dive of Tenjo to go in at half time on level terms.
Within seconds of the restart Cosmos went ahead as Matt Lewis headed in from an Espinal corner. The Cosmos defender got on the end of a deep corner and the ball crept inside the post. The goal changed the dynamic of the game as Milwaukee came into the game more and Cosmos became less of a threat. The home side forced a good save from Castano from a long range free-kick that was tipped over.
When Cosmos did attack they found more space as Milwaukee became more ambitious in attack and Acuna fired narrowly wide as Cosmos went in search of a 3rd goal. Cosmos had some defending to do as Milwaukee pushed on for an equaliser, but Cosmos almost snatched a late goal as Kafari fashioned an effort on goal which Tenjo could only parry but Acuna could not convert the rebound.
The victory sets up a titanic clash with Detroit, with both sides unbeaten in the Members Cup, with the winners of that match extremely likely to end up with the title.
