(NPSL 2019) Boston City 1v3 New York Cosmos B
Saturday 15th June 2019
Hormel Stadium, Boston Attendance -
A brace from Bocanegra helped Cosmos to extend their 100% record in the NPSL with a 3v1 win in Boston against the Lions of Boston City. Boston had only recorded 1 win in 10 games so far, but had made some new additions to the squad, 3 of which made the starting line up. Added to the fact that Cosmos faced another match 24hrs later forcing Cosmos into making several changes to the line up meant that the match was closer than may have been expected.
Cosmos lost Al Hassan early on to injury, but with Cosmos still temporarily down to 10 men they took the lead with less than 15mins on the clock when a Bocanegra effort deflected off Boston's Tomasso D'Agostino and into the net. The goal came from a long throw-in into the Boston area which the Lions failed to deal with. The lead did not last long however as Boston equalised with their first dangerous attack when a long ball caught the Cosmos defence flat-footed and Hugo Bomfim produced a nice finish to equalise.
Cosmos regained the lead with a 3rd goal in a short space of time after good work from Espinal down the Cosmos left wing and after Bocanegra's first effort was saved by Katz in the Boston goal the Cosmos man followed up on his effort to score at the 2nd attempt.
The action continued at both ends and Boston went in search of a 2nd equaliser and a great attempt by Godeiro Neto went just wide.
Boston continued their good spell and a Batista effort forced Corke into a save, but Cosmos went even closer at the other end just before half time when Katz produced a great doubkle save, firstly from a Charlie Ledula volley and then the rebound from Espinal.
Just seconds into the 2nd half Cosmos almost sent Ledula clear with a last gasp challenge by the Boston defence coming to the home sides rescue. Cosmos
had much the better of the 2nd half and they should have made it 3v1 but Bocanegra spurned the opportunity by looping his effort over the bar.
A series of fouls interrupted the action in the 2nd half but Cosmos were looking the side more likely to score the next goal as Galvao drove a 20 yard effort onto the post with Sambroni forcing Katz into a save from a corner soon after.
The Cosmos pressure paid off and a good move down the left ended with a low cross finding Espinal who fired high into the net to finally put clear daylight between the 2 sides.
Boston had long ceased being a threat and Cosmos were in control and Barone had an effort strike the Boston bar after a fine effort in the 74th minute.
Boston did manage a late spell of pressure and Neto forced Corke into a save low to his left but Cosmos saw out the rest of the game to record the win.
