(NPSL Members Cup 2019) Detroit City FC 1v1 New York Cosmos B
Saturday 21st September 2019
Keyworth Stadium, Detroit Attendance - 6,297
The two frontrunners in the Members Cup battled to a 1v1 draw as we remain no closer to finding out who will win the trophy. After a small weather delay Cosmos came out the better side and Espinal skipped past 3 players on the edge of the Detroit box before curling an effort just past the post.
Cosmos continued to put pressure on the Detroit goal and Aaron Dennis had an effort well saved by Nathan Steinwascher in the home goal. Detroit were working hard to stifle the Cosmos in attack, but when Detroit did have opportunities to go forward they lacked support and the Cosmos goal was barely threatened in the first half.
Late in the 1st half Cosmos had their best spell of the game as Espinal threaded a ball through to Acuna but Steinwascher came out well to make the stop. Steinwascher made 2 stops from Espinal free-kicks from the edge of the box and Detroit also cleared a header off the line from a corner as the home side managed to make it into half time level at 0v0.
Detroit had not managed a notable effort on goal for the entire 1st half, but took a surprise lead less than 2mins into the 2nd half. Detroit won a corner and the set piece was allowed across the Cosmos goal where defender Stephen Carroll headed in unchallenged at the far post.
Straight from the restart Aaron Dennis drove into the box but the angle was against him and shot into the side netting. Cosmos equalised after Espinal finally found the net less than 10mins later, with a free-kick from the 3rd attempt after another Detroit foul on the edge of the box.
Any hopes Cosmos had of pushing on for a winner took a blow when Acuna was sent off after an altercation with a Detroit player. Acuna was fouled but retaliated and the Detroit player theatrically fell to the ground which led to a harsh red card considering Acuna had not raised an arm. With a man advantage Detroit pumped balls forward to try and snatch an undeserved victory, but under the circumstances Cosmos bolted the back door and settled for a draw.
The Title decider may be played out in New York when these 2 sides will meet again, but before that Cosmos must navigate tricky fixtures against Chattanooga and Milwaukee first.
